Writing with Starling
Starling works inside X's own composers. Every draft lands in X's box for you to review. Starling never posts.
Create and Enhance
Wherever X shows a composer, Starling adds a ✦ button next to X's own Post or Reply button. Its label tells you what it will do.
| What is in the box | Button | What Starling does |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing yet | Create | Writes a new draft for that post, reply or quote. |
| Your own words | Enhance | Rewrites what you typed so it reads better, keeping your point. |
While Starling works, the button shows its progress, and you can cancel. A request you cancel before anything is shown does not use your allowance; one you stop after its text has started to appear does.
Replies and quotes
Press ✦ on a post to ask Starling whether it is worth a reply or a quote. When it is, Starling opens X's composer for that exact post and writes the draft into it.
Sometimes Starling suggests leaving a post alone and tells you why. You can still ask for a draft in the panel.
New posts
Start a new post in X and choose Create. Without a subject, Starling picks something new in your niche and writes about it, with the pages it used. Or ask the panel for ideas first and draft from the one you pick.
Post ideas follow your own niche: Starling looks for what is new in it, in news feeds, and cites the pages it used. Replies, quotes, rewrites and chat work on any post.
Your typing comes first
If you type in the composer while Starling is working, Starling stops and leaves your text alone. If a draft cannot be placed, for example because you closed the composer, Starling offers the draft for you to copy so nothing is lost.
Posts with images
When the post you ask about, or your own draft, has images attached, the extension sends small copies of them so the draft can take them into account.
How drafts match your voice
Starling drafts from:
- your own posts: on your profile on X, open the panel's Settings and press "Add my posts from this page" (it adds the posts of yours that X has loaded there, never anyone else's, and never posts anything),
- writing samples you add in the panel,
- what happens to its drafts: whether you used, edited or discarded them,
- preferences you confirm in chat, such as "no hashtags", and
- your own profile and post stats, if you turned on the optional learning choice.
What Starling never does
- It never presses Post or Reply to publish anything.
- It never likes, follows or sends messages.
- It does not run on direct messages.
If X changes its page and Starling cannot act safely, it leaves X unchanged and tells you, instead of guessing.
You are responsible for what you post
AI drafts can be wrong, out of date or unsuitable. Read every draft before you post it, check any facts it states, and follow X's rules. See the Acceptable use policy.
How drafting uses your allowance
A draft is used each time Starling gives you a draft or an answer. Requests that fail, even partway through, requests you cancel before anything is shown, and drafts Starling holds back are not charged. See Plans and usage.
